BECOMING

A few weeks ago I watched a full interview that Oprah facilitated with our former First Lady, Michele Obama on her newest book “Becoming Michele Obama”. I have not read her book yet but it’s on my bucket list of books I want to read for sure. This interview truly captured my attention because she was very authentic and transparent as she shared snippets of her book to a very broad audience.

I absolutely love the title “Becoming” because so often I counsel with young adults in their early 20s and they beat themselves down because they don’t know or understand their purpose. They battle with trying to find their identity and to have everything perfect. The perfect job, the perfect spouse, perfect social life, perfect church, perfect home, perfect income and the list goes on. I always ask them, “How old are you again?” They say 21, or 22, or 25. Some haven’t finished college yet, some just graduated from college, and some are working at a job they don’t necessarily like. You see, I’ve learned that “EVOLVING” and walking in your, “PURPOSE” takes time. It’s even possible to know your purpose at a young age but you still have to go through a process. It takes time for all of the above areas that people complain about to evolve and it takes work as well.

I also love the fact that she says you are not going to be “One Thing”. Your purpose is not just in one area. You will not be the same person you were 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 1 year ago, 6 months ago, and maybe even last week. You’ll make mistakes, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and life will challenge you you through the good times and the bad. Your interests will change and you’ll desire to do more as you work towards your purpose.

I know for myself, my live has been a journey full of ups down, Pain, Passion, and Purpose. I know without a shadow of doubt there is so much in store for me and my purpose but I must remind myself to not rush the process and not move ahead of God’s timing.

Here are a few tips that I have to offer when you feel like you are behind and/or stuck in life.

  1. Don’t compare your life to other people. Watching social media and seeing others success can have your mind a mess. You don’t know their story and what it took for them to get where they are.
  2. To whom much is given, much is required. It takes sacrifices, obedience, and risks to walk on Purpose.
  3. I don’t care what job you are in whether you hate it or love it, there are lessons to be learned, identify them and get the lesson. There’s nothing more fun then having to learn the same lesson over and over again, especially when you belong to the Lord 🙂
  4. Productivity does always mean it is moving you towards purpose. Seek wisdom, pray, draw at a vision board of the things that interest you, take action.
  5. When you make a mistake, learn from it and keep going.
  6. Identify what success looks like to you and determined on what society says or is determined on what your heart and the Lord has to say.
  7. Follow your heart and the leading of the Holy Spirit. I can’t tell you how many times I was unctioned by the Holy Spirit to move on something that I never would have thought of in my own mind.
  8. We all have multiple gifts and can be used interchangeably in her career, ministry, and/or life. Ask Holy Spirit to show you, after all he is the Author and Finisher of our Faith.
  9. Remember it takes faith to walk in life, whether you are a believer or not. You are not going to know every detail of your life ahead of time.
