When I heard this song by Johnathan McReynolds’s, “Comparison Kills” my spirit was leaping in bounds because I just knew that I had to blog about it. It is such an authentic and heartfelt song. This song is so relevant in today’s society. We are fixated on images and seeing others on social media and other social settings appear to be successful or perfect. Growing up I most definitely had low self esteem. I had a severe speech impediment, extremely skinny, and suffered from all types of abuse. In the process of that I lost my voice and had no idea who I was. I had to climb over many mountains and give my pain to the Lord. (Psalm 34:18, The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit).
God alone can only fill a void in your heart that is reserved for Him only. Not friends, not a husband, jobs, success, material things, and/or money. We all have imperfections, but that is what makes us unique and special (Genesis 1:7, So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them). I can sit here and point out every flaw that I have based on that alone and my self esteem would be crushed. But I promise you if you spend time with the Lord, spend time loving you, and spend time in your Word, it will transform your life. God himself has showered me down with so much love and blessings which resulted in my confidence residing in him. (Jeremiah 17:7, But blessed is the on who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him). Do I have insecure moments? Absolutely, but I fight with the Word of God. Don’t fight it by comparing yourself to others or putting others down just to make yourself feel better. Just Be You!
I also see this in the Body of Christ. People comparing titles, gifts, annoitings, and talents (1 Corinthians 12:12-27, There is one body but it has many parts. But all its parts make up ONE body. We are all baptized by one Holy Spirit who is the giver of all gifts. And so we are formed into one body). But remember, we all have a purpose and have a part to play. Every good gift comes from the Lord and the sole purpose of it is to advance the Kingdom of God. Iron sharpens iron and we need each other’s gifts to be sharpened and edified.
Take a moment, breath, and think to your self, How is Comparison killing me?
This is topic that surely needs to be explored more but I will leave you with this. Colossians 3:1-3 Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right had of God. Set your minds on things above not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
