Gossip, Gossip, Gossip

You know, Gossip is so powerful. It has the ability and power to tear someone down and it had the ability and power to build someone up. I for one absolutely hate gossip and I always feel uncomfortable when I am around people who are gossiping. As a believer of Christ Jesus we should all definitely hate gossip too. It has the power to destroy relationships and ruin someone’s reputation. Most of the time gossip is full of lies and the real truth is never revealed.

It’s a fine line between gossip and venting. Gossip falls in the category of just being nosy, having an evil heart, sometimes jealousy, and sometimes because people really don’t have anything else to do and are just plain bitter. Gossip slows you down and distracts you from your purpose. Venting falls in the category of being hurt but even with that, it’s done with someone you can trust, who can pray for you, and who can help build you up. I am so thankful that I have a couple of people to hold me accountable and check me if I start falling in that category of gossiping because I’m hurt.

Did you know that gossipping are word curses spoken over someone’s life. Check out a more detailed article here. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that, The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Wow, so basically if we lift someone up you will be lifted up and if you put someone down you are actually doing that to yourself.

How Can You Avoid Gossip?

Consider these simple steps to be sure you are not involved in gossip:

  • Do not associate yourself with one who is a known gossip.
  • When someone starts to gossip — change the subject or just ignore them
  • If you are not part of the problem or part of the solution, stay out of it.
  • If you have fallen into the bad habit of gossiping — ask God to change your heart.
  • When you have been the victim of gossip — confront the parties that spread the rumor and most importantly be led by God.

Ephesians 4:29 tells is to let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
